Think Outside the Store Artist-in-Residence

Photo:  Sarah Gingold and Lauren Lay at D.C. Fashion Week 2013

In 2013 I was the Artist in Residence at Think Outside the Store a clothing art studio in downtown Silver Spring that was dedicated to promoting creative expression and consumer consciousness through clothing.  My residency with Sarah Gingold focused on "Couture Seasons."  I completed Winter and Spring, began the work on the leaves for Fall, and envisioned Summer during this time.

I cannot express how rich this experience was for me.  A residency is so much more than simply providing space.  It's about connections and conversations and creativity.  Along the way, Sarah invited me to participate in projects that strengthened our bond as friends as creatives, as well as pushing my own boundaries artistically, like Project G Street and Project Blue Wrap.  Below you'll find a few images of some of these projects.

Back of dress--blue and white stripes and orange cheetah print really do go together!
Blue Ribbon Winners! The judges commented on the design (no pattern), construction, and fit.
Blue Wrap Dress Front. Blue Wrap is the plabric (plastic and fabric) that covers surgical trays in hospitals.
Back of Dress. Since the wrap is like paper, I chose a paper weaving method.
