I've been artfully manipulating fabric since childhood. My wardrobe and my toys were primarily hand me downs, the consequence of being the youngest sibling, cousin, and neighbor. I played with first generation Barbie and Madge dolls and updated their wardrobes from materials I had on hand. One of my earliest projects was a miniature purse with straps and pockets using the vinyl packaging from a household item. I was upcycling way before it was a thing.
My artistic journey has introduced me to a variety of media and artists. These relationships inform my art-making, giving me options to reach for when discerning how to make artistic visions a reality. I appreciate the path that other artists are on and love how these connections often become so mutually supportive. In the past few years, I have been intentional about adding embroidery to my work. This has been a wonderful way to stretch the boundaries of adding texture and layering in a particular work. Delving into stitched shibori and wet felting provide two very different ways to add color and texture to my art. I consider my work to fall into two categories that often overlap: Product and Fine Art. There are some items that work up relatively quickly. Others take months (if not years) of research, design, and creation. Common motifs in much of my work are sheep and mannequins--perhaps one day I'll make a sheep mannequin but that's a quest for another day. I am also drawn to the beauty of the natural world and storytelling. I enjoy exploring ways to connect a variety of materials and disciplines to create new work. Thanks for joining me on this journey by landing on this website. I hope that you'll find it inspirational and informational! |
